What is an Official Number?

A number allocated by the Registry of Shipping and Seamen to a UK ship while it is on the UK register. It must be marked permanently on the ship and is shown on the Certificate of British Registry. It is withdrawn by the RSS and must be defaced if the ship is removed from the UK register, but is re-allocated if the ship returns to the UK register.
