What is the common link between United Kingdom ships and British ships?

They all fly flags which are in the Red Ensign Group, i. e. their national registers are controlled by the UK Department for Transport and they may fly Red Ensigns, either plain or defaced with the registering territory’s badge. They are all entitled to the same diplomatic and military protection of the UK Government. Red Ensign Group website: www. redensigngroup. org
