What must the Company do about ensuring it can respond to emergencies on board?

The SMS should provide for measures ensuring that the Company’s organisation can respond at any time to hazards, accidents and emergency situations involving its ships. (Para. 8. 3) This means in practice that the Company should have in place ashore procedures (and any necessary equipment or other resources) for responding at any time to a shipboard emergency. A 24-hour contact should be available to the master.
