What or who is an agent?

A person who acts on behalf of another (called the principal) in such a way asΒ to affect the other’s legal position, often in bringing the principal into a contractual relationship with a third party. Examples of agents in merchant shipping are: (1) shipbrokers; (2) port agents; and (3) in certain circumstances, shipmasters.
