What precaution should be taken to ensure that a deep sea pilot who boards is a professional pilot?

After boarding, the pilot’s licence card should be inspected.Β

A UK pilot’s licence card should bear the words: “In the name of the Corporation of Trinity House. The bearer of this card is licensed to act as a Deep-Sea Pilot. All Authorities involved shall recognize him in this capacity and shall render him aid and protection in the pursuance of his duties. ” On the back should be the licence number, date of issue and limits; and the pilot’s name, photograph, date of birth and signature. (MGN 55, which is no longer listed in the MCA’s list of current M Notices, showed a specimen card and gave addresses of all European authorising bodies.)
