What is a safety management system?

A structured and documented system enabling Company personnel to effectively implement the Company’s safety and environmental protection policy. An SMS will normally include manuals or electronic documents in which procedures covering every operation of the Company and its ships, both routine and emergency, with checklists and other supporting documentation.
