Which ships, if any, must have safety representatives in the crew?

There is no statutory requirement for any UK ship to have a safety representative, although it may be a contractual requirement or part of the company’s safety policy. But The Merchant Shipping and Fishing Vessels (Health and Safety at Work) Regulations require the master of a ship with more than 5 crew to arrange, if requested, the election of a safety representative if the crew want one.
