What are the principal statutory requirements regarding the supply of provisions and water to the crew of a UK ship?

Under The Merchant Shipping (Provisions and Water) Regulations 1989 (SI 1989/102) the employer and the master have a general duty to provide “adequate” provisions and water to the crew.Β

Provisions and water must be suitable in respect of quantity, nutritive value, quality and variety having regard to the size of the crew and the character and nature of the voyage. They must not contain anything likely to cause sickness or injury to health or which makes them unpalatable, and they must be otherwise fit for consumption.
