What is a Particularly Sensitive Sea Area (PSSA)?

An area that needs special protection through action by IMO because of its significance for recognized ecological, socio-economic, or scientific reasons and because it may be vulnerable to damage by international shipping activities. Specific additional measures can be used in a PSSA to control maritime activities in the area, such as routeing measures, a mandatory ship reporting system and vessel traffic services (VTS).
