What is an original bill of lading?

A bill of lading forming part of the set of signed bills, any one of which must be surrendered to the carrier at the discharge port in order to claim delivery of the goods. The most common number of originals in a set is probably three, although sets of two are also common, and a few shipments go under just one original bill.
