What is dead weight?

The total weight, in metric tons, of cargo, bunker fuel, ballast, fresh water, ship’s stores, crew, crew’s effects, passengers, and passengers’ accompanied baggage which a vessel is able to carry. For purposes of UK merchant shipping regulations it is the difference in metric tons between the displacement of a ship in water of a specific gravity of 1.025 at the load waterline corresponding to the assigned summer freeboard and the lightweight of the ship.
