What new convention, intended to replace the Hague, Hague- Visby and Hamburg Rules, was adopted in 2008 by the United Nations?

The United Nations Convention on Contracts for the International Carriage of Goods Wholly or Partly by Sea, more commonly known as the Rotterdam Rules.Β 

In addition to providing for modern door-to-door container transport, it contains many innovative features, including provisions allowing for electronic transport records, and other more technical features to fill the perceived gaps in the existing rules. The Convention will enter into force one year after 20 States have ratified it. (See also Rotterdam Rules below in this Section. )
