What preparations should a shipmaster make for commencing cargo operations?

(1) He should hold a pre-arrival meeting with all officers and any petty officers (e. g. pumpman and bosun) concerned with cargo operations.

(2) Risk assessments may have to be carried out as per Safety Management System instructions. (3) If ship’s lifting gear will be used, he should ensure that the Register of Lifting Appliances and Cargo Handling Gear is in order for inspection by shore labour representatives and port State control officers.
