Who is the ship’s agent’s principal?

The party who appointed the agent and will therefore be paving the agency fee.

If the shipowners will be paying the fee, then owners are the agent’s principal, regardless of whether charterers or any other party nominated the agent. (Nominating an agent means specifying the agent to be used, and is not the same as appointing the agent. ) (See questions on agency law in Section B. )
