Why is it so important to follow the dismissal procedures laid down in the Merchant Navy Code of Conduct?

Because failure to do so in any respect (e. g. not allowing the seafarer to have someone speak for him or her at the hearing) might allow the seafarer, if he or she is dismissed, to win a claim of unfair dismissal brought before an Employment Tribunal. Dismissal must be for a fair reason and in a fair manner. t statements made in the Official Log Book; and (4) that the seafarer signs an Official Log Book entry acknowledging receipt of those copies.
