What is the sole objective of an investigation by the MAIB?

The prevention of future accidents through the ascertainment of the accident’s causes and circumstances. Its purpose is not to determine liability nor, except so far as is necessary to achieve its objective, to apportion blame. The MAIB is not an enforcement or prosecuting body.
