If, for example:
(1) a ship was so badly damaged that the cost of repairs would exceed the value of the repaired vessel (e. g. in the case of an old single-hulled tanker); (2) a ship was ashore in a position from which it would be difficult to refloat her without great expense; or (3) a ship was trapped in a war situation (e. g. as has happened to ships in Middle East conflicts).
