How many copies of a Letter of Protest should be sent to the other party?

The original should be sent for the retention of the other party. One copy should have a place for the time and date of receipt and the signature of the other party, and should have a written instruction for this copy to be returned, signed, to the ship. A ship’s copy should be retained on board.
