The master should: (1) ensure the safety of the ship, personnel and the seaman himself;
(2) remove the seaman from duty and substitute another seaman; (3) have the seaman sobered up; (4) discipline the seaman in accordance with any applicable code of conduct (Merchant Navy or company) (was he drunk enough to jeopardise the safety of the ship and personnel?).
