What are a shipmaster’s statutory obligations on receiving a distress alert?

To proceed with all speed to the assistance of the persons in distress, informing them or the SAR service, if possible, that the ship is doing so. An entry must be made in the Official Log Book or Radio Log of the receipt of the distress signal. Entries should also be made fully describing any assistance being given.
