What are the chief differences between the Rotterdam Rules and the rules they are intended to replace?

(1) The Rotterdam Rules apply to goods carriage from door to door (whereas the existing rules apply only to the sea leg of the carriage);

 (2) the Rotterdam Rules allow for e-commerce and containerisation; and (3) the Rotterdam Rules clarify and bring uniformity to liability.
