What surveys are required for the structure, machinery and equipment (other than safety equipment or radio equipment) of a UK cargo ship in the HSSC?

(1) Before the ship is put into service, an initial survey of the structure and machinery, including an inspection of the outside of the ship’s bottom;Β 

(2) within 3 months before or after each anniversary of the issue date of the Cargo Ship Safety Construction Certificate, except where an intermediate survey is required, an annual survey; (3) within 3 months before or after either the second or third anniversary of the issue date of the Safety Construction Certificate, an intermediate survey; (4) within any five-year period*, two inspections of the outside of the ship’s bottom, not more than 36 months apart; (5) before the fifth anniversary of the issue date of the Safety Construction Certificate, a renewal survey (for issue of a new certificate); and (6) after any repair resulting from investigations following a report to the MCA or a proper officer of an accident or a defect affecting the safety of the ship or its LSA, an additional survey. (* “Any five-year period” means the five-year period of validity of the Cargo Ship Safety Construction Certificate or the Cargo Ship Safety Certificate.)
