When must a classed ship have its first and subsequent special surveys?

The first Special Survey must be completed within 5 years from the date of the initial classification survey and thereafter 5 years from the credited date of the previous Special Survey. However, an extension of class of 3 months maximum beyond the 5th year can be granted in exceptional circumstances. ubject to proper maintenance and operation. It is also intended to detect possible damages and to establish the extent of any deterioration.
