Notify party

Notify party. This is the name of the person in the box on a standard form bill of lading, marked “Notify address”.

The carrier must inform the notify party of the arrival of the goods. The notify party has no actual right to the goods. He acts as the agent of the shipper or can also be the consignee or the agent of the consignee.

Therefore he may be able to bring an action for non delivery. Sometimes a bank which has provided finance for a commercial transaction involving the bill of F lading may be named as the notify party. The notify party may have to arrange for the receipt of the goods and their clearance inwards and delivery to the consignee! buyer. Therefore the notify party may also be a forwarding and clearing agent.
