What are the MCA’s functions with respect to statutory surveys?

The MCA has responsibility to the Secretary of State for Transport for conducting all surveys of UK ships required by UK Merchant Shipping legislation, including surveys to verify compliance with international conventions to which the UK is a party and surveys to verify compliance with EU law and UK national law. MCA surveyors carry out initial surveys and scheduled annual surveys, intermediate surveys, periodical surveys, renewal surveys, inspections of the outside of ships’ bottoms, additional surveys, and Β general inspections (which may be unannounced). The majority of statutory survey work is delegated by the MCA to seven authorised classification societies.
