Why is it so important to complete the Official Log Book in the correct manner?

Because it is a public record and may be referred to in investigations by the MCA or lawyers, relatives of deceased seamen, etc. It is also admissible in evidence in UK court procedures under section 287 of the Merchant Shipping Act 1995.
